Tai and Danny Koch
Hello! We’re Danny & Tai Koch, founders of Abbanuach and creators of Deck the Halls. People frequently ask us how we came up with Deck the Halls or even got into this business. Our family has always loved to spend time together. We enjoy having friends and family over to share a meal and play a game. When we owned a duplex, our tenants would frequently come over for BBQ game nights. They shared our passion for board games and brought a new game to try almost every visit. Of course, after playing and loving each new game we’d buy a copy for ourselves. Soon, we had a way-too-large collection of board games and it quickly became our “thing”.
In 2019, as an at home date we got the crazy idea to design a game. We didn’t know if it would ever become a reality, it just started out as a fun idea. We had a family inside joke about the “Figgy Pudding” lines in the Christmas song “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. The rude insistence on getting Figgy Pudding, or else (“we won’t go until we’ve got some!”) was hilarious to us, so it got us on a Christmas track. (And in case you’re wondering – unfortunately there isn’t any figgy pudding in “Deck the Halls” – maybe next time.) As we started designing Deck the Halls, it all fell into place. By the end of the first evening, we had the basics figured out. Surprisingly, very little had to be changed from that initial play to final production. After much playtesting, we knew we had something worth producing. We signed with our New York Times best-selling artist Michael Garland, and at that point, we were all in. This was happening!
We love the idea of bringing families and friends together in community. As Christians, we believe God designed us with a need for community and our business’ goal is to bring people together for our good and God’s glory. We named our business Abbanuach by combining the Hebrew words for Father (Abba) and Rest (Nuach), to capture the beauty of His heart to bring people to a place of abiding (or resting) in Him. Playing games is a wonderful ice breaker and a fun way to build relationships during your precious free time. They are just one way to build togetherness and we hope our game can help you become closer with your family and friends…and have fun doing it!
